22 Things I Learned As a 22-Year-Old

 * Fresh figs

I've been inspired by my good friend Anthony to compile a list of tidbits I've learnt so far.

1. Four simple and easy self-improvement projects that will boost your confidence: Stand up straight, smile and make eye contact whenever possible, and develop a firm handshake.

2. Running was my first true love. I've put more hours into that relationship than any other in my life. He’s been really good to me.

3. I have a superhero complex. Instead of picking the super awesome nice guy, I am compelled to save the needy bad boy. Obviously this has never ended well, haha.

4. It’s a gazillion times easier to fall in love than to stay in love. And no matter what the sad songs say about love, broken hearts do mend. It just takes time, patience, and good friends.
Conversely to the popular notion that it is therapeutic to "get under someone" or date a string of guys, either of these methods are true.  Ultimately, you have to know yourself (inside and out), and love yourself before you are ready to be involved someone.

5. I still struggle with my boarder line OCD and perfectionist tendencies; some days are better than others.

6. Never underestimate a balanced diet and exercise. Eat right and exercise regularly and you’ll feel like you're 18 again.
I emphasize on  feeling 18. I've been told multiple times that appearance-wise I have "matured into a young woman". Personally, I don't think I have made that transition. You can be the judge; check out my grade twelve photo

7. If you want to get ahead in life, you have to drop the people dragging you down. Distance yourself from them and move on. And I quite Dory from Finding Nemo, "[J]ust keep swimming. Just keep swimming."

8. Cell phones are a gift and a curse. People think they are entitled to your time. Don’t let that notion rule you.

9. During a crisis or when you're in a difficult circumstance, you actually do know what to do. Most often than not you are subconsciously ignoring the truth.

10. Having nice toys (i.e. tangible items) is awesome but having true friends is better.

11. Nobody is better or worse than you because of the clothes they wear, car they drive or house they live in. Examining individuals for who they truly are will make you appreciate humanity much more.

12. The greatest virtue is not charity or patience, it is empathy.

13. You can change your values, morals, and principles but no matter how hard you try, you can’t change the essence of who you are. Embrace it and use it to your advantage.

14. You can’t avoid offending people from time to time. It just means that you stood up for someone or something in your life.

15. The most valuable thing to have is a good reputation, and it’s neither hard nor expensive to acquire one: Be honest. Be trustworthy. Respectful towards others.

16. Nothing is certain; everything is socially constructed.

17. Stigma is not only disgraceful, it is disgusting.

18. Maximize each day - try to squeeze every last drop of goodness from it. When you look back, you won't have any regrets.

19. Candor is hilarious... with me anyways.
Some classic candor moments:
* I'm on a second date with a guy and I said, "But your mom will like me!"
* Telling my good buddy, Ryan, that "I'm practically naked" over the phone.
* Offering to hold my friend's tennis balls which was misinterpreted as a sexual innuendo.

20. To overcome indecisiveness trust your gut feeling and run with the choice you have made. Even if it means running with scissors. To quote Ryan, "Wheeeeee!"

21. A fear of failure is a ticket to mediocrity. It's good to fail from time to time, it just means you are challenging yourself and not simply drifting in life.

22. The greatest key to happiness is keeping perspective. Take an artisan's point of view towards life, from a distance the bumpiest paths looks clean, sleek, and very smooth.

* Homemade cookies! Yum!

Christmas Came Early: Presents from Kelowna, BC

My brother, Jones, visited Kelowna and brought back a lot of presents!

* Stewart/Alexandro came back! Funny story behind the naming of this stuffed animal...

* Jones and I wanted to adopt this rabbit, Stewart, from an elderly couple...but our plans fell through

* A big box of fresh peaches

* Close-up of a peach. It was very juicy!

* Haha, a Kinder Surprise toy. Rawr!

* Starting from the bottom left (counter clockwise): Smoked cheddar cheese with salmon (from Vernon, BC), unpasteurized honey with ginger, peppermint lip balms, bag of walnuts, apple cider, white wine, rose wine, and ice wine.

* Wines!

Little Straw Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Review
The Little Straw Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc (Limited 2009 Vintage) label saids...

Nestled at the foot of an extinct volcano, our vineyard is home to some of the oldest vines plants in the Okanagan Valley. The colcanic soils and micro-climate allow for complete ripeness and expression of varietal character in the creation of this fine handcrafted wine.

The wine was delish! We paired the white wine with seafood (i.e. jumbo shrimp) and it was the perfect combination. The wine had sweet citrusy tang and classic grassy flavours.   The only con about the wine is that I couldn't taste the "melon flavours". Nevertheless, the drink was very smooth (12% alc.) and memorable.

This Is Madness!

My good buddy, Justin, and I had an entertaining dialogue today about scheduling madness...I was telling him about my good ol' block week course that will kick off my lovely Fall semester in the Social Work program. Instead of me blabbing about it, here's our dialogue:

* Justin: 13 week course condensed into in 1 week?
* Me: Essentially.
* Justin: Who came up with that idea?
* Me: The people upstairs.
* Justin: That means you need to take at least 2 quizzes a day, the reading-week will essentially become reading hour, midterm after the 3rd day, and final exam on the 7th day, and margarita party on the 8th day?
* Justin: Geesh, and I thought New Yorkers live a fast life.
* Me: Welcome to my life.

Here's a snapshot of my "big" schedule for these coming months.

Oooooh, I'm so happy to announce that my friend, Laura C., and I will be partnering up with Matchstick for their Revolutionary Reds Challenge by Loreal Professionnel. 123 Days of Summer

Those who know me on a personal level know that I'm a person that likes to stay motivated. I set goals and pursue them like an animal. As an optimist I believe that everything is achievable by creating lists, staying organized, and keeping a clean work space.

One of the most important things that I have been pursing is my education. I have been going to school non-stop for the last eight years. Yes, you read that statement correctly. These past eight years have been both a blessing and curse.

This summer was the first 123 days that I had all to myself. During this time, I had days of crazy wild fun, and moments of reflection where I asked myself hard questions.  In these 123 days I learnt 10 very valuable lessons that deserve to be shared. =)

1. Promptness shows respect.

2.  Always, always, always trust your gut instinct. This instinct can save you a lot of grief.

3. Unrequited love is not only foolish, it is also creepy and stalkerish.

4. Knowing how to cook is one of the most invaluable skills you can have.

5. You should know within the first fifteen five minutes of meeting a guy if there is a connection, if not, take it for what it is worth and move on.

6. Eating greasy foods is like cheating on one's boyfriend. You’re usually tipsy, it feels great in the moment, but you regret it instantly.

7. Karma exist. When she comes around be prepared for a round of hurting.

8. When it comes to relationships don't always let logic and reasoning rule your life. It is acceptable to succumb to your emotions and hormones. Before proceeding to doing what "feels right" foreshadow the consequences, and then you won't have any regrets.

9. You eat the seeds you sow.  If you don’t like something about your situation, change it. Don't wallow in self pity. It’s much easier than you think, and very satisfying.

10. Never take your parents, siblings, and friends for granted. Appreciate the people in your life because they could slip away at any moment.

I'm sorry that I don't have anything revolutionary to say. However, I can tell you that life is short but it is good. When approaching any situation remember: clear eyes, full hearts; can't lose now! :)

Your friend Much love,
Margaret
